Economic Impact of 151A
 
 

Everyone might want some guidance on the impact of the Security and Exchange Commission's (SEC) rule 151A. This information is far more compelling than the information you have received in the past, much less what was provided to the court or the SEC.

It is vital that you support the industry by contacting your legislators about HR 2733 and S 1389. The Indexed Annuitites and Insurance Products Classification Act of 2009 will "undo" the SEC's actions with 151A, and ensure the fixed insurance status of indexed annuities and indexed life insurance.

Insurance agents sold $26,752,278,197 in indexed annuities in 2008.
 
The commissions paid on those sales (assuming the 2Q2009 average weighted commission of 6.8%) is $1,819,154,917.40.
 
This does not consider the profits for insurers, B/Ds, or the wages of home office personel. However, I would guess that the economic impact of 151A would still exceed $2,220,439,090.36 annually. Granted, this does assume that everyone stops selling products, and no registered products are sold in the future, these estimates may be conservative.
 
 - The Dept of Insurance states that there are 65,000 insurance jobs in Connecticut, the #1 insurance capital of the United States. 
 
- The Dept of Insurance states that there are 44,500 insurance jobs in Iowa, the #2 insurance capital of the United States. 
 
- The Dept of Insurance states that there are 60,000 insurance jobs in Indiana, the #3 insurance capital of the United States. 
That is nearly 170,000 insurance jobs in just three states!
 
These elected officials need to hear how their constituents will be affected by the SEC's action.

CDA Long-Term Disability Claims Review
 
 
 
Since 2005, the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) has conducted a proprietarty annual review of long-term disability claims among the U.S. working population. The purpose is to identify continuing or emerging trends, and to share them with interested audiences. The 2008 CDA Long-Term Disablity Claims Review includes quantitative and - for the first time - qualitative long-term disability insurance claims data from the annual CDA member long-term disability claims survey. Also included is selected worker disability data from the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. 15 CDA Member Companies, representing over 75% of the commercial disability insurance marketplace, participated in the 2008 survey.
